Gratitude is an underrated virtue. Feeling thankful for the wonderful things in your life can do a lot to improve your mood and your view of yourself. It’s easy to forget all the blessings in our lives when things get difficult or when our inner naysayer is being particularly loud. Taking time to remember the good things can bring an entirely new and positive perspective to a negative situation. Starting your day by focusing on gratitude and positivity is a practice that can have a tremendous effect on every aspect of your day.

Giving thanks can get you started on the right foot. You’ll leave the house feeling more optimistic and content than you would otherwise. That feeling can last throughout the day, and it can also serve to insulate you from any stress or obstacles you encounter in your regular routine. Let’s consider some easy ways to get started each day with a practice of gratitude and positivity.

Start a Journal

A gratitude journal is one of the easiest ways to keep your blessings at hand. Start your day by writing down three to five things you’re grateful for in your life. You can expand upon that and write details about each, if you choose. This simple act starts your day on a positive note. You can also look back at past entries any time you need a pick-me-up about just how great your life is.

Repeat Affirmations

Affirmations are concise, positive sentences. Usually, they’re personal statements about yourself and your life. Affirmations are meant as a reminder of your gifts and abilities. They’re an awesome tool for reminding yourself just how wonderful you are as a person. You can really boost your self-confidence with this effective practice. Create an affirmation and repeat it out loud several times. Soon, you’ll absorb the message and carry it with you as you go about your day.

Reflect on Your Blessings

Sometimes, just sitting in quiet contemplation to reflect on your blessings can be enough. This type of meditation focuses your thoughts and grounds you in mindfulness. It’s a way of centering yourself and purposefully beginning your day with gratitude and positivity. Sitting with a cup of tea in a quiet place is sufficient, or you can choose a more formal meditation position of sitting on a pillow placed upon the floor. It doesn’t matter, as long as you have privacy and can be alone with your thoughts.

Keep these techniques in mind if you’re looking for a way to begin each morning with purpose and to guide your day in gratitude. You’ll notice a shift in your attitude and in the ways in which you manage obstacles you encounter. Problems won’t seem as significant when you create a morning ritual such as this.

Your inner naysayer thrives on the unknown. When things are ambiguous or uncertain, fear can set in. It’s only natural and is part of the human condition. That voice inside your head that’s trying desperately to keep you safe will see the unknown as a threat. That’s when you’ll start to experience a flood of negative self-talk. One sure way to combat these negative messages is by having a plan. Focus on specifics to defuse your inner naysayer. Let me show you how.

Know the Details

When you start to recognize your inner naysayer rearing its pesky head, it’s a good idea to see if you can start putting together some details. This can alleviate some of the anxiety you’re feeling. For instance, if you’re worried about applying for a promotion at work, you’ll want to start making a list of your unique qualifications. You’ll need this information in order to ace the interview, anyway. Gathering it now will push you forward and give you the confidence to apply. With these details, you can counter the negative messages your inner critic is sending.

Make a Plan

Once you have some of the details and evidence together to help hush your inner naysayer, you can begin to formulate a plan to move you forward. To stay with the last example, strategize for a potential interview. Make sure your resume is up to date and that it looks professional. Prepare for potential questions you could be asked. Pull together a stellar reference list. Ask questions of any insiders you might know who could provide you some insight into what the interview will be like. Add anything you can think of to solidify your plan. Your inner critic can’t really argue with someone who has a strategy in place.

Write a List

Sometimes your inner naysayer’s voice can be incredibly loud. You might be feeling too overwhelmed and defeated to gather all the details and make a fully formulated plan. That’s okay. Even a small step can help you to at least quiet your inner critic. This can buy you some time and create some breathing room for formulating a plan later. Just writing a list of things that go against the messages your naysayer is telling you might help. Perhaps jotting down just three things that qualify you for the promotion can boost your confidence enough to consider applying for the job.   These tips can help you to get a handle on your inner naysayer. Just taking a few small actions is often enough to provide you with a more realistic view of the situation. Give this approach a shot next time you’re feeling pressure from your inner critic.

Yesterday, I gave you ways to tell if you should listen to your inner naysayer and today I am going to give you some tips on how to recognize when your inner naysayer shows up.

As you’ve discovered in our time together, your inner naysayer can present itself in several ways. Often, it shows up as a negative voice that keeps you from moving toward your goals or trying something new. Sometimes, though, it can be helpful and clue you in that something isn’t quite right. Regardless, your inner naysayer is usually trying to protect you in some way. What’s most important is acting in a positive and proactive way when you receive these internal messages, whether they’re useful or detrimental. In order to take action that benefits you, you’ll first need to recognize your inner naysayer when it pipes up. Keep reading to learn how to do just that.

Why You Need to Recognize Your Inner Naysayer

Chances are you’ve been living with your inner naysayer for as long as you can remember. That means it’s likely that you are so used to hearing it in your head that you probably don’t even notice it. That’s bad news. If you don’t recognize your inner critic, you can’t deal with it. Without recognizing it and addressing it, you’re simply reacting to it – acting on autopilot. Giving in to your reactions or acting in habitual ways can be harmful because you’re not fully in charge when that happens. Instead, your negative emotions are guiding you. You’re not making an informed decision. Therefore, you probably won’t achieve the results you truly desire. In order to take purposeful action and take control of your life, you need to recognize and deal with your inner naysayer.

How to Recognize Your Inner Naysayer

Your inner naysayer can be sneaky. It usually comes around when you’re about to do something important, so keep that in mind. When something is good for your growth, but perhaps a bit out of your comfort zone, your inner critic might pipe up to keep you from taking that risk. It also might come around when you’re feeling fearful or unsure. It also likes to rear its head when you really want something.

Pay attention and listen for messages like these in order to recognize your inner naysayer:

  • I don’t deserve good things.
  • I’ll mess it up.
  • It’s too hard.
  • I’m too old.
  • I’m not smart enough.
  • Good things never happen for me.
  • It’s selfish to want that.
  • I don’t have what it takes.
  • I’m not that talented.
  • Someone else is better than me.
  • I’m no good at that.
  • I’m too fat.
  • I’m not pretty enough.

Self-doubt is frequently connected to these types of messages. While it’s normal to wonder if you have what it takes to achieve something new, these types of messages can truly sabotage your success.

Steps to Manage Your Inner Naysayer

There are ways to manage your inner naysayer. Take note of the types of messages you tell yourself most often. Then watch for what triggers those messages. Recognizing those triggers can help you to take control of the situation instead of giving into the negative self-talk. It’s also helpful to try to figure out where these messages came from. Others may have told you things in the past, and you’ve internalized these beliefs as your own. Knowing how you developed these thoughts will help you to look at them more realistically. Finally, once you have a realistic handle on these words, turn them around into something more positive. Tell yourself a message that is based in reality and that encourages you, rather than discourages you.

Your inner naysayer has been around for a long time, but it doesn’t have to be in charge of you. It is possible to overcome its negative effects. With practice, you’ll soon be able to recognize your inner naysayer and manage its messages.
